National School Nurse Day: Advocates for 21st Century Student Health

Please join me in recognizing the contributions to student health and learning that your School Nurses make every day! Students across Ohio attend school and fully engage in learning because of the interventions and actions of School Nurses. This year we celebrate National School Nurse Day on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. Please celebrate School Nurses’ contributions which include:

Ohio Department of Education (ODE) Licensed School Nurses have advanced education in student health and safety.  They lead your school district staff in following the most legally sound and evidenced based standards that keep students healthy and in the classroom learning.

Students with chronic and acute health conditions have their health needs met at school because of their School Nurses’ clinical assessments, judgments, planning, interventions and evaluations.

Evidence-based practice is the foundation of School Nurse interventions.  Data collection by School Nurses may be used by their districts for accountability measures, such as the chronic absenteeism rates required in the Every Student Succeeds Act and Ohio’s school quality indicator.

School Nurses function within the scope of their practice as Ohio Registered Nurses and ODE Licensed School Nurses to safeguard student health and safety and promote positive health outcomes.

School Nurses combat school and community health barriers by partnering with health departments and school based healthcare providers to advocate for policies and systems that promote healthy communities. School Nurses work to mitigate social and economic barriers that impact student health and learning.

School Nurses optimize student health and learning every day of the year!  Celebrate the positive outcomes to attendance, health and learning that your School Nurses bring to the students of your school district by recognizing your School Nurses on National School Nurse Day on May 9, 2018.

Sincerely,

Joan Hlinomaz MS, BSN, RN, LSN, NCSN

President, Ohio Association of School Nurses

Definition of School Nursing in Ohio

As a professional organization, the Ohio Association of School Nurses recognizes that school nursing is a unique and special practice of nursing.  The practice of school nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School Nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. Adopted by the NASN Board of Directors February 2017.

In Ohio, the title School Nurse may only be used by OH RNs that have an ODE Professional Pupil Services School Nurse license.  OASN encourages all Registered Nurses working in OH schools to pursue school nurse licensure through the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).   ODE School Nurse Licensure has been proven critical to the professional growth and assimilation of the Registered Nurse into the educational environment. School Nurses are "key to student success".
