Message from our President

Hello Southwest Ohio School Nurses,

I have been thinking about how far we have come since 2020 and the start of the Covid pandemic. I thought about all the challenges we faced in the past few years, but it made me think of the challenges school nurses have always faced.

Most of the time  the school nurse is the only medical professional in the building.  No one else truly understands what we do, A lot of times we see students who really do not need medical care because the teacher sends them anyway.  But we see them, give them a little TLC and send them back to class. This can get frustrating, and we can get caught up in “but it’s not my job”, but sometimes the school nurse may be the one person this student can turn to.  Countless connections are made in the clinic, and you may be responsible for making that student feel cared for and accepted.

Often we are advocating for the importance of school nurses.  When districts need to re-evaluate budgets, it seems often they look to health services to make cuts.  Some of us are still trying to help the administration understand the need for a licensed school nurse in every building.  I was recently asked why a mom with a child with a chronic medical condition is not qualified to work in a school clinic. While I can appreciate what that mother faces on a daily basis, I was dumbfounded that this was seen as adequate experience and education to be able to run the clinic as a nurse would.

But we push on, and we persevere.  We continue to make school accessible to all and help students thrive so they can be successful.  I have found that, through SWOSNA, OASN, and NASN, I have the tools to help administrators, teachers, parents, and others understand what it means to be a school nurse, and why school nurses are important to the district. Through these professional organizations, I have found a home - a group of strong, like minded nurses who “fight the good fight” every day. They give me the strength to continue to advocate for school nurses. Thanks to all of you who are part of this amazing group of professionals who have dedicated your career to ensuring all students have the opportunities to experience every part of school, to thrive, and succeed.
